Victims of a man suspected of conning hundreds of women across the country are now crying for justice after detectives drawn from Mombasa Central police station failed to produce the suspect in court to face relevant charges.
The victims are now accusing police of foul play following the arrest of the suspect namely Simon Ekai Ewoi who was arrested in Kilifi and ferried to Mombasa Central police station on Thursday last week where reports had been made by four complainants.
According to the victims who had camped outside the Mombasa law court building since morning, Ewoi has been held at Central police station since Thursday 20/ 3 /24, and was set to be produced to court today.
However, the investigating officer informed the complainant in the matter that the files were not ready and they were waiting for directives from the director of public prosecutions(ODPP).
Police were yet to apply for miscallinoius application to allow his continued detention at Central police station.
“I lost around 12M however today in the morning the IO has been taking us in rounds informing us that the files that were forwarded to the ODPP were yet to be received back at the station to enable police to produce him in a court of law,” lamented one of his victims
Another victim alleged that she had in the year 2021 lost over 40 million to the suspect and despite having co-operated with detectives justice was yet to be served.
According to police reports, Ewoi would approach and befriend women in posh restaurants, on social media, during morning walks along the beaches, and at sometimes parks at the Mombasa International Airport waiting for his prey.
They say he allegedly poses as a rich businessman and requests his victims to work with him or lend him money on the grounds that his bank accounts have been frozen by the government.
The cases have been reported at Central police stastion under OB numbers ,22/3/2024,16/11/2021,20/3/2024 and 02/29/ 20
However according to a senior police officer privy to the matter, he stated that all the files reported at the Central police station had been forwarded to the ODPP’s office for review and further action.
“Our hands are tied and we intend to release the suspect by today since the investigation files have been forwarded to the ODPP but he is yet to approve the charges ,”said the officer who spoke on condition of anyonimity
On his part Urban sub county police commander Maxwell Agoro noted that he was not privy to the matter since he was away.
“Been away for sometime however allow me to establish on why he has not be arraigned before court under miscallinoius application awaiting completion of investigations,”he stated.
