The race for political influence has entered a new phase, with parties and emerging movements holding strategic consultations, mobilising grassroots support, and seeking alliances that could shape the country’s next electoral contest.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed that the Azimio coalition is engaged in talks with several political leaders and parties as it seeks to expand its alliance ahead of the polls. Musyoka said the coalition’s leadership has been mandated to reach out to like minded political formations as preparations for the 2027 election gather pace.
According to Musyoka, the opposition’s strategy is centred on creating a broad-based political platform capable of uniting different interests under one umbrella and presenting a strong challenge to President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“The future of our politics will be determined by the strength of our unity. We are engaging leaders and parties that share a common vision of building a better Kenya and giving citizens a credible alternative in 2027,” Musyoka said.
The Wiper leader confirmed that Azimio has opened discussions with the Linda Mwananchi movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, as the group continues with its process of seeking registration as a political party.
The engagement is part of a wider opposition strategy to consolidate support across regions and establish a political vehicle that can compete effectively in the next General Election.
Linda Mwananchi has also announced plans to intensify its grassroots mobilisation efforts, with the movement set to tour Homa Bay County on August 26. The visit is expected to attract attention given Homa Bay’s historical significance as a political stronghold associated with the Odinga family and opposition politics.
The county is widely viewed as a key support base for Linda Mwananchi, with political observers linking the movement’s growing presence in the region to the influence of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political network and leaders such as East African Legislative Assembly MP Oburu Odinga.
The planned Homa Bay tour is expected to focus on strengthening grassroots structures, engaging local communities, and expanding the movement’s presence ahead of the 2027 political contest.
Meanwhile, leaders under the United Opposition banner continue to hold consultations aimed at creating a united front and selecting a joint presidential candidate who can face President Ruto in the next election.
However, despite the ongoing negotiations, the opposition alliance has not officially announced its presidential flag bearer or running mate, leaving the issue of leadership within the coalition open for further discussions.
The political debate has also intensified after the Luhya Council of Elders endorsed Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions under the United Opposition arrangement. The elders said Sifuna had demonstrated national appeal and the potential to attract support beyond his traditional political base.
On the government side, President William Ruto has maintained confidence in his re-election prospects, insisting that he has not yet launched his official campaign for 2027.
Speaking at a recent public engagement, President Ruto said the appropriate time for political campaigns would come, expressing confidence that his administration’s development record would earn him victory at the ballot.
“I have not even started my campaign. When the time comes, we will go to the people and present our achievements. The opposition will meet us at the ballot, and Kenyans will make the final decision,” President Ruto said.
The President has continued to highlight government programmes and development initiatives as key pillars of his political message, arguing that his administration’s focus remains on improving livelihoods, expanding economic opportunities, and delivering services to citizens.
With both sides positioning themselves for the contest ahead, the 2027 election is already shaping up to be a major political battle. Opposition forces are working to build unity and momentum, while President Ruto and his allies are projecting confidence in their ability to defend their mandate.
As alliances continue to form and political movements expand their grassroots operations, the coming months are expected to define the direction of Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next General Elections.
