Police in Mtwapa have arrested an alleged notorious fraudster believed to be part of a syndicate exploiting vulnerable residents with false promises of procuring them travel documents and legitimate employment opportunities in European countries.
William Kirema Njiru was arrested yesterday by detectives who posed as clients, tricked him into travelling to Mombasa from their rural home in tharaka nithi county where he had been hiding.
According to police reports, the suspect’s con game begun way back in 2022 before he closed his Mtwapa office and went into hiding in 2023 after issuing fake visas to some of the victims.
Kilifi south sub-county police commander Hassan Kochale said the police commenced Investigations after several reports of obtaining were made at Mtwapa police station against the fake job recruiter.
Victims paid between Ksh.37,000 to Ksh.350,000 for the fraudulent overseas job recruitment.
Six complainants have so far positively identified the suspect who is now held at Mtwapa police station pending court arraignment on Monday next week.
Kochale has warned Kilifi South residents about fraudsters and urged them to report any such incidents to police
