Vocal Africa, in partnership with Amazing Group of Persons with Disabilities -CBO yesterday facilitated a community youth -police engagement forum at Vitsangalaweni area in Vijiweni, Likoni, Mombasa.
The sensitization session led by the officer commanding Vijiweni police station, Titus Kyalo aimed at bridging the gap, building trust, and resolving conflicts between law enforcement officers, the youth and the broader society.
According to Vocal Africa’s projects lead, Naheeda Kassim, beyond deliberation the forum focused on key issues affecting the youths and community in general including insecurity, police harassment, timely reporting of incidents, and adherence to the rule of law.
Naheeda emphasized that Vocal Africa was committed in fostering and promoting positive relationships between law enforcers and members of the community across Mombasa and beyond.
Most youths who spoke during the meeting accused individual officers of harassment and extortion.
On his part, Chief Inspector Titus Kyalo noted that a safe and secure community is built not only through law enforcement but also through meaningful dialogue and shared responsibility.
Kyalo also commended the youth for their active participation and readiness to collaborate with the police in fighting crime in the area.
The founder and director Amazing Group for Persons with Disabilities, Emily Juma,said the drive dubbed Enhancing Safety and Security in Mombasa County would be extended to other identified insecurity hospots within Likoni and Kisauni to address root causes of violence, rebuild fractured trust between members of the community and security officers and co-create localized safety solutions
